The private hospital and college announced Wednesday a new program that will create 20 nursing scholarships and a hospital nursing officer who will work for the hospital and with the students.
Bacone will supply the scholarships, and MRMC will fund the nursing officer. The graduates will agree to work for MRMC for six months for every semester they received scholarship.
An agreement like this between a hospital and a college is not new, but it’s new for this community.
And yes, MRMC and its parent company, Capella HealthCare, are getting something very valuable out of the partnership.
But the partnership will benefit everyone, including the people of this community who will seek MRMC’s care. Also, it will provide a well-established career avenue for many young people.
The shortage of nurses and the unfavorable effects it would have on health care have been discussed for years nationwide, and the situation has only grown worse instead of better. It’s good to see cooperation in a community to resolve a pressing need.
